I hire remote workers. How do I complete the identification inspection step to comply with Form I-9?

Employers must complete the identification inspection step to complete Form I-9 for remote workers using a trusted agent or representative. In theory this can be anyone, understanding that some states such as California place restrictions on who can complete the Form I-9 and best practices also dictate that the trusted agent or representative be someone other than a family member of the worker. This is the case regardless of whether you use an online tool to complete the form or do it by paper. Therefore, you can still use our I-9 & W-4 app to complete the form, and it certainly does make it much easier to complete for remote workers! However, the identification documents always have to presented and inspected in person.
